  •   1. How can the Public Trustee help in the administration of compensation
     in motor accident cases?
The Public Trustee protects the interests of road traffic accident victims who have suffered personal injuries under the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act (Cap. 189). The Public Trustee examines the adequacy of out-of-court settlements of compensation above S$5,000, ensures that all solicitor's fees are reasonable and distributes the compensation monies received to the persons entitled.

Under Section 6(2) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act (Cap. 189), all out-of-court settlements for general damages above S$5,000 shall require the Public Trustee’s approval.

The Public Trustee’s approval of the compensation amount is not required if:

    • a Judgment/Order of Court has been obtained; or
    • there are other such court based settlement conferences.
