The Public Trustee protects the interests of road traffic accident victims who have suffered personal injuries under the
Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act (Cap. 189). The Public Trustee examines the adequacy of out-of-court settlements of compensation above S$5,000, ensures that all solicitor's fees are reasonable and distributes the compensation monies received to the persons entitled.
Under Section 6(2) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act (Cap. 189), all out-of-court settlements for general damages above S$5,000 shall require the Public Trustee’s approval.
The Public Trustee’s approval of the compensation amount is not required if:
- a Judgment/Order of Court has been obtained; or
- there are other such court based settlement conferences.
